How to vote in Joburg 2026.
Skip the fear-of-getting-it-wrong feeling. Under 30 minutes off-peak, one ballot for your ward, one for the city.

Am I registered?
Check in 30 seconds:
- Online: registertovote.elections.org.za
- SMS your ID to 32810 (R1)

- Call 0800 11 8000
Registration closes the day the election is proclaimed — expected early August 2026. Don't wait.
Section 2
What ID do I need?
✓ Green ID book
The old bar-coded one.
✓ Smart ID card
The plastic Home Affairs card.
✓ Valid TIC
Temporary Identity Certificate (issued by Home Affairs).
Not accepted:
✗ Passport ✗ Driver's licence ✗ Certified copy ✗ Bank card
Section 3
The two ballots
Ballot 1
Your ward
One person, elected for your street. Answers for water, lights, roads, refuse in your ward.
Ballot 2
The city (PR)
Party or independent list. Fills the other 135 seats on the council by proportion.
Council: 270 seats total. Ward + PR together decide who runs Joburg.

Inside the station — 6 steps

- 6Drop each ballot in its box. Done.
Average visit off-peak: under 30 minutes.

Special votes
If you can't make it on election day — pregnant, infirm, disabled, working the day — you can apply for a special vote. Expected dates: 2–3 November (expected).
- Home visit: for those who cannot travel
- Station special vote: cast in advance at your station
- Status: SMS ID to 32711
Section 6
Myths, busted
"My vote doesn't count in a metro this big."
Ward races in Joburg are routinely decided by a few hundred votes. Your street is the unit.
"I can vote at any station."
Not for municipal elections. You must vote where you're registered. The station finder tells you where.
"Voting takes all day."
Off-peak: under 30 minutes. Early bird (07:00–09:00) has the shortest queues.
"A spoilt ballot is a protest that counts."
It gets counted as spoilt — it does not change any seat. If you don't like anyone, at least mark the ballot you least dislike or leave the ballot untouched.
